Matt Minor and Adam Morris sure know how to throw a party. Formed only five years ago, the youthful duo of Mashd N Kutcher are followed by over a million Facebook users. Each video they release garners tens of millions of views.
Reputed for producing multiple gold-selling records and once voted Australia’s number one DJ duo, this Brisbane-grown electronic twosome are most beloved for their high-octane mashups, which they will be bringing to the Siloso Beach Party, happening on 31 December.
Besides blowing the roof off whenever they drop an infectious banger, this unlikely alliance of a drummer and classically trained pianist are also consummate live performers who often brandish a variety of instruments and refuse to sit tight behind their DJ consoles.
We catch up with the affable Aussies, who will be pulling out all their party tricks when they make their long-awaited return to Singapore.
Hi guys, are you excited to perform at the Siloso Beach Party?
We’re very excited to come back to Singapore! The nightlife here is excellent, and the people here are very warm and friendly.
Will you tell us the story of how a drummer and a classical pianist teamed up to become Australia's number one DJ duo?
We met through a mutual friend in our hometown. We both found common ground with electronic music, and the rest is history!
What are your fondest memories you’ve made since embarking on this electronic journey?
We’ve played some amazing shows in Europe, Asia and America. We especially remember the S20 festival in Thailand – that was massive!
Who inspires you and keeps you going?
We grew up listening to a mix of rock bands and hip-hop artistes. So many musicians helped build the inspiration for our music. The electronic dance music landscape is constantly evolving, and new music technology lets us try new things all the time, which is always exciting.
You guys are famous for producing incredible mashups. What separates a good mashup from a great mashup?
With mashups, mixing in key is essential. We find common themes and have to take a few risks, but these risks usually pay off.
When you want to make your partygoers go apesh*t, which of your tunes do you drop?
The loudest and fastest tracks possible!
Lastly, do you have any New Year's resolutions?
Adam is currently learning to play the guitar and wants to get better at playing it!
