FROM THEN TO NOW: EVOLUTION OF DJ SPIN OFF ALUMNI
Witness the evolution of our DJ Spin Off alumni
As a new year rolls in, Sentosa kicks off another electrifying round of its DJ Spin Off competition! Since 2015, Sentosa has been shaping the future of Singapore’s nightlife scene with this annual spectacle – an adrenaline-charged, action-packed hunt for Singapore’s next superstar DJ.
The Sentosa DJ Spin Off gathers starry-eyed selectors from all over the Lion City and beyond, but only one is crowned the deftest on the decks.
A victory that transcends mere bragging rights, topping the Sentosa DJ Spin Off not only bags winners a cash prize ($2,000 for 1st prize, $1,500 for 2nd, and $500 for 3rd) but also grants them a rare opportunity to perform at the Siloso Beach Party on New Year’s Eve.
And with a grand stage like that, playing in front of thousands of ravers alongside top international DJs like Don Diablo and Bassjackers, the chances of their DJ careers sky-rocketing increase significantly. Just have a look at the head-turning evolution of the competition’s past winners.
For 2018 winner, Ezra Hazard, the competition was a series of firsts for the young DJ/producer.
Sentosa DJ Spin Off 2018 was the first ever DJ competition that he joined, and won. And consequently, of course, Siloso Beach Party was the first time he ever played at a large scale event, let alone a New Year’s Eve countdown event.
Playing at SBP was a really fun experience, since it was my first time playing at such a massive stage. The crowd was insane as well despite my set being at an early slot. It was also really insightful to get to see what goes on behind the scenes of such a huge production. I really learnt a lot from that experience.
Not bad for someone who only took up DJing in 2015 when he was studying in Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Since the competition last year, Ezra has played at venues including Zouk Singapore, and Avry. But he’s also been busy on the producing front; releasing tracks that has received support from some Top 100 DJs such as Wolfpack and Rave Republic.
Another highlight of his DJ career would be during Ultra Singapore 2019 when he made an appearance on stage, performing alongside Rave Republic.
We made a remix of High Hopes by Panic! At The Disco in the weeks leading up to Ultra and we decided to perform it together during their set. It definitely has to be one of my proudest moments!
His advice for future DJ Spin Off contestants?
Practice your mixing till it's perfect. Try your best to be original in your song choices and remember to have a good stage presence!

Being a champion of nightlife in the region, the Sentosa DJ Spin Off has also opened its doors to talents outside of Singapore. Notably, it added a prestigious golden chapter to the then-burgeoning career of The Kendrick who pursued this dream all the way from Myanmar.
A selector who dabbles in the harder genres of trap, dubstep and hardstyle, The Kendrick – a first-runner-up in the Myanmar DJ Championship 2016 – wanted to spread his wings further and do his nation proud.
“As a foreigner from Myanmar, I tried so hard before taking part in Sentosa DJ Spin Off 2017. I cancelled gigs I was having at that moment, flew over to Singapore and stayed there for a week during the length of the competition. It was all worth it in the end. My career escalated.” – The Kendrick
Playing at Siloso Beach Party 2017, alongside the likes of Bassjackers, exposed The Kendrick to awestruck audiences in Singapore. But more than that, it helped boost his own reputation back home.
He earned slots in Myanmar clubs like Fuse and Play House, and has also become a mainstay at local festivals like Invasic Music Fest, where he opened for Quintino, Vinai and Wildstylez; and the Thingyan Festival, Myanmar’s New Year Festival.

Even without distinguished mentors showing you the ropes, you can still carve out your dreams. As a self-taught DJ, Shawny Shawn hustled and sharpened his skills to get to where he is today.
With all that hard work, he was not only a finalist at the Pioneer DJ Battle 2014, but also made history by participating in the Guinness World Record for the longest club DJ relay in 2014 – a ground-breaking accolade that brought together a whopping number of 133 DJs. All this helped pave the way for his victory at Sentosa DJ Spin Off 2016.
“It was a dream I had five years ago to play at the Siloso Beach Party. I felt like an underdog, especially knowing that I was up against some of Singapore’s finest DJs who were already playing in nightclubs at that period. Nonetheless, I told myself that I could do this and needed to show what I was capable of. From countless nights of crafting to planning the perfect sets for the competition, it all paid off!” – Shawny Shawn
Opening for Quintino at Siloso Beach Party 2016 truly thrust Shawny Shawn into the spotlight. With his fingers on the pulse of the global EDM and hip-hop scene, he evolved into an adept beatsmith who’s sought after everywhere, from alfresco beach clubs to urban warehouse spaces.
He’s spun at Sentosa’s own prime establishments such as Wave House Sentosa and the former Mambo Beach Club, and beyond the island at city nightspots including Attica. Since his win, he’s also been offered gigs all the way from Thailand, Australia, Myanmar and Bali.

A journey that began at the age of 17, Caden’s DJ upbringing was first honed by hip-hop legend DJ Rattle in Singapore Polytechnic.
Through that, he learnt the basics of mixing and the art of turntablism, nascent achievements that earned him recognition in 2012 as a finalist in the Live Mix Maestro competition by Pioneer, Lenovo and Zouk.
Three years later, his brilliance on the decks and versatility in switching genres would earn him a win at Sentosa DJ Spin Off 2015.
“During the competition, I stayed calm and composed through my set. Playing different genres helps in the competition, as it shows how versatile you can be as a DJ. I think the competition is great for DJs who want to get more exposure and build their name in the local scene. It’s definitely an unforgettable experience.” – DJ Caden
That experience earned him a coveted spot at Siloso Beach Party 2015, where he opened for Dutch EDM maverick, Don Diablo.
With that exposure, Caden was able to establish his career as a formidable open-format selector, securing residencies in local clubs like SPACE and Club 36, and playing at the mighty Zouk.
Going beyond borders, Caden was even invited to play at the renowned Envy Club in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.
